A framework for content governance

The Content Room has published a guide to content governance. You need content governance to make your content strategy work. It is about assigning roles and responsibilities, and defining and documenting work processes.

While content management is about the content itself, content governance is about the people, processes and resources involved in its planning, creation, management, publication and evaluation.

In A framework for content governance we discuss six steps towards a proper content governance framework:

1

Determine your governance model

Your model should reflect your company’s strategy. For example, some companies opt for a highly centralised model with a single ‘war room’ to control all content-related activities.

2

Assess your current situation

Identify the problems in your current workflow, so that you can fix them. There may be a number of tasks and responsibilities which are not properly assigned or defined.

3

Define processes and roles

Your work processes should encompass your entire content lifecycle, from planning to evaluation. Each process will involve specific roles and responsibilities.

4

Define standards and guidelines

Once you know your roles, you can define the standards and guidelines associated with them. Standards and guidelines are necessary in order to guarantee quality and to avoid legal issues.

5

Setting Key Performance Indicators

Measure the results of your content efforts so that you can refine and improve your content strategy.

6

Automate processes

Automation can increase your operational efficiency and improve the quality of your content.

The new guide includes a comprehensive checklist for content governance.
