6 steps towards building a content governance framework

Marketers and communicators can rely on more content, social and mobile channels than ever before to attract an audience and build a community. To protect and improve brand equity, operational efficiency and content quality amidst this explosion of new possibilities, your company needs content governance.

Cypres is working on a content governance guide that outlines the steps towards building your own content governance framework.
The six steps are:

  1. Choosing a governance model
Your model should reflect the strategy of your company. Contentology has published a good Comparison chart of Web Governance Models.

  2. Assessing your current situation
You need to identify current content problems, pains, and gaps. If you don’t, how can you solve them?

  3. Defining workflow and roles
Once you’ve assessed your current situation, you can start to describe the framework that will improve your situation. You should design a workflow that works for you and add roles and responsibilities to every stage of the workflow process.

  4. Documenting standards and policies
Standards and policies are needed to guarantee quality, and to protect your company against litigation.

  5. Setting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Define SMART goals to track your progress. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound. SMARTER adds two criteria: Evaluate and Re-Evaluate.

  6. Installing automation technologies
Automation is needed for operational efficiency and quality control in a world of multi-devices, multi-channels, and real time communication.
